Sumba 5 Days vs 7 Days: One Coast or Full Crossing?
10 min read
A 5-day luxury Sumba itinerary stays on one side of the island, normally West and Southwest Sumba out of Tambolaka, with one resort and roughly 9-11 hours of total driving. A 7-day itinerary crosses to East Sumba, adds a second and third resort, a second airport (Waingapu), a half-day transfer and no extra rest day unless you plan one.
Sumba is larger than Bali and its roads are rough, so trip length changes the shape of the trip, not just the invoice. Five days buys depth on one coast. Seven days buys the crossing. The decision comes down to how many hours you will accept in a car, and whether East Sumba’s hills and savanna matter more to you than a second full rest day.
What is the real difference between five days and seven?
Both plans share the same arrival: a domestic flight from Bali (DPS) to Tambolaka (TMC) in West Sumba, around an hour in the air depending on the aircraft, then a road transfer of about 60-90 minutes to the Wanokaka coast where Nihi Sumba (Hoba Wawi) and Lelewatu Resort sit, or roughly 50 minutes to Cap Karoso on Karoso Beach in Kodi, Southwest Sumba. After that they diverge.
| Factor | 5-day one-side (TMC in, TMC out) | 7-day crossing (TMC in, WGP out) |
|---|---|---|
| Regions covered | Sumba Barat + Sumba Barat Daya | Barat Daya + Barat + Tengah (transit) + Timur |
| Resort moves | 0 (one base; Kodi as a day trip) | 2 (Kodi to Wanokaka to Waingapu) |
| Airports | 1 (TMC) | 2 (TMC in, WGP out) |
| Indicative driving total | About 9-11 hours over 5 days | About 14-18 hours over 7 days |
| Longest single drive | Kodi day trip, 4-5 h round trip | Wanokaka to Waingapu crossing, 5-6 h with stops |
| Full rest days | 1 | 1 (2 only if you drop Kodi or add an 8th day) |
| East Sumba | Not included | Walakiri, Wairinding, Tanggedu or Puru Kambera |
Driving figures are indicative; road conditions and rain change them. The crossing plan is what we build as our 7D6N luxury Sumba package, operated by Indonesia Juara Trip with one private driver-guide the whole way. The 5-day version is the 5D4N ladder with a Kodi day added; nothing else changes.
A note on the 5-day variant: if a 4-5 hour Kodi round trip from Wanokaka sounds punishing, split the five days 2+2 between Cap Karoso and a Wanokaka resort instead. That costs one resort move but keeps every drive under two hours and leaves you about 50 minutes from TMC on departure day.
How do the two itineraries compare day by day?
| Day | 5-day one-side | 7-day crossing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fly DPS-TMC, transfer to Wanokaka (60-90 min), first sunset at the resort | Fly DPS-TMC, transfer to Kodi (about 50 min, per Cap Karoso’s own estimate), afternoon on Karoso Beach |
| 2 | Wanokaka circuit: Lapopu waterfall, Marosi and Kerewei beaches, a Waikabubak megalithic village (about 3 h driving) | Kodi short hops: Ratenggaro, Weekuri lagoon, Mandorak (about 2 h driving) |
| 3 | Full rest day: pool, spa, horses, surf, nothing scheduled | Move to Wanokaka via Waikabubak villages (2.5-3 h), check in by mid-afternoon |
| 4 | Kodi day trip: Ratenggaro, Weekuri, Mandorak, back for dinner (4-5 h driving) | Full rest day at Nihi or Lelewatu; optional short Lapopu or Marosi outing |
| 5 | Transfer to TMC (60-90 min), fly to Bali | The crossing: Wanokaka to Waingapu via a Central Sumba megalithic village (5-6 h), Walakiri sunset if timing allows |
| 6 | — | East Sumba day: Wairinding hills at dawn, Tanggedu waterfall or Puru Kambera savanna, an ikat weaving village near Waingapu (3-4 h driving) |
| 7 | — | Short transfer to Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport (WGP), fly out |
Read the middle column carefully. The 5-day plan places a real rest day on Day 3, so the long Kodi day on Day 4 lands on a rested traveller. The 7-day plan’s only full rest day is Day 4, right before the hardest drive of the trip, which is exactly where it belongs.
One more thing the table hides: the 7-day plan has two check-out mornings and two check-in afternoons. Each one costs roughly half a day of resort time. Over a week that is a full day you never see on the itinerary, and it is the main reason the crossing feels shorter than its calendar length.
What does East Sumba add for the extra two days?
East Sumba looks nothing like the west. The Wanokaka side is green and hilly; the Waingapu side is dry savanna, low ridges and long horizons. Two extra days out of Waingapu give you:
- Wairinding hills — rolling grass ridges close to town, best at dawn or in the last hour of light.
- Walakiri beach — low-tide mangroves silhouetted at sunset, a short drive from Waingapu.
- Tanggedu waterfall — a longer excursion into a dry canyon; expect a walk at the end of the road.
- Puru Kambera — savanna and a long empty beach with free-roaming horses.
- Ikat weaving — East Sumba is the home of hinggi ikat; village visits near Waingapu show the natural-dye process, arranged through a licensed local host with set photography hours.
What East Sumba does not add is a Nihi-tier resort. Accommodation on the Waingapu side sits at boutique or hotel level, confirmed per quote, and that tier gap is something the reservations team states before you book, not after. Travellers who expect a second Nihi on the east coast are the ones who come home disappointed; travellers who treat the last two nights as an expedition come home with the better photographs.
Which cost drivers change when you stretch from five to seven days?
None of the figures below is a package total. Indonesia Juara Trip prices vary by group size and duration, resort rates are quoted separately, and everything is subject to change; totals are confirmed by the team once dates, duration, group size and inclusions are locked.
| Cost driver | 5-day one-side | 7-day crossing | What moves it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator price (IJT) | 5D4N quoted on request per person, for your dates, duration, group size and inclusions | 7D6N and 6D5N quoted on request | Two more days of driver-guide hire, second-airport handling, crossing-day fuel |
| Resort nights | 4 nights, one property | 6 nights across up to three properties | Two extra nights plus second and third check-ins; Nihi’s published rates exclude a 21 percent tax and service charge |
| Resort tier examples | Nihi, Lelewatu and Cap Karoso rates are quoted on request for the room or villa type, dates and length of stay | Same on the west side, plus 2 Waingapu-side nights at boutique or hotel tier | Season: Nihi’s peak windows are 1 July-31 August and 29 December-7 January |
| Flights | DPS-TMC return | DPS-TMC one way plus WGP-DPS one way (open-jaw) | Two one-way fares price independently; schedules change, never assume a departure time |
| Private car and driver | 5 days | 7 days | Two more days of driver-guide and vehicle hire; the daily rate is quoted per trip by vehicle class |
| Signature experiences | e.g. Nihi “Sunrise Splash” IDR 9,400,000 per person, subject to 21% tax and service charge (NIHI Sumba Experiences Price List 2026/2027) | Same, plus East Sumba excursions | Optional; booked direct with the resort |
The rule of thumb: a 7-day crossing is not “a 5-day trip plus 40 percent”. It carries two extra resort nights, one or two more properties, a second airport and two more days of driver-guide hire. The East Sumba nights usually cost less per night than the west side, while the crossing day costs more in fuel and time.
What planning mistakes happen when you stretch to seven days?
- Booking a DPS-TMC return ticket. The crossing only works open-jaw. A return from Tambolaka forces a 5-6 hour backtrack on Day 7 that erases the East Sumba gain.
- Putting the crossing on a flight day. Never drive Wanokaka to Waingapu and fly the same afternoon; one washed-out stretch of road and the flight is gone.
- Three resort moves. Lelewatu lists a 12:00 check-out and a 14:00 check-in; every move eats half a day. Two moves in seven days is the ceiling.
- Expecting the east to match the west. It will not, at resort level. Plan the East Sumba nights as an expedition, not a second Nihi.
- Skipping the rest day to fit more in. Seven days with no full rest day feels shorter than five days with one.
- Crossing in the wettest months. Roughly December to March, rivers rise and the Central Sumba stretch slows; waterfalls run hard but the schedule buffer has to grow.
- Adat village visits without a licensed local host. Set photography hours and drone restrictions apply in West, Central and East; a driver-guide who knows the village is not optional.
- Leaving Nihi’s peak weeks to chance. July, August and the 29 December-7 January window fill early; the Day 4 rest day is worth nothing if the villa is not confirmed, so lock the resort before the flights.
Which one should you book?
Book five days if this is your first Sumba trip, you want one resort and you want to feel rested when you land back in Bali. Book seven days if you have already seen the west, if East Sumba’s ikat and savanna are the point, or if you accept two resort moves as the price of seeing the whole island.
| Your priority | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum resort time, minimum packing | 5-day one-side | One base, one check-in, a genuine rest day |
| Seeing both landscapes of Sumba | 7-day crossing | West is green and hilly, east is dry savanna; only the crossing shows both |
| Photography (villages, ikat, horses) | 7-day crossing | Wairinding at dawn, Walakiri at dusk, weaving villages near Waingapu |
| Travelling with young children | 5-day one-side, 2+2 split | Every drive under two hours, no crossing day |
| Surf or resort programme at Nihi | 5-day one-side | The Wanokaka base keeps every activity within reach |
| Budget sensitivity on resort nights | 7-day crossing | East Sumba nights cost less per night; the west-side nights set the total |
Whichever length you choose, the operator side stays the same: Indonesia Juara Trip supplies the private driver-guide, the vehicle, permits and village hosts, and the reservations team confirms every resort, flight and figure on the quote before you pay. Write to sales@indonesiajuara.asia or WhatsApp 628119941919 with your dates and whether you prefer one coast or the crossing, and the team returns a day-by-day plan with operator and resort figures shown separately.
How many hours in the car is too many?
For most travellers the ceiling is about four hours of driving in a day, and no more than two long days back to back. The Kodi round trip from Wanokaka and the Wanokaka to Waingapu crossing both hit that ceiling, which is why each sits beside a rest day. Anything beyond that turns a holiday into a road survey.
Is there a middle option between one coast and the full crossing?
Yes: six days on the west side split between Cap Karoso in Kodi and a Wanokaka resort, with two full rest days and no drive over two hours. It costs one resort move, skips East Sumba entirely, and departs from Tambolaka, so a return DPS-TMC ticket works. Ask the team for the 6D5N ladder as the base.
Which months favour the crossing?
Roughly May to October, the dry season, when the Central Sumba road is fastest and the East Sumba savanna turns gold. Late April and early November are the shoulder windows: greener hills, fewer visitors, some rain risk. December to March the crossing still runs but needs a wider buffer, and July-August books out earliest.
