The Story of Nihi: From Surf Camp to World’s Best

From a 1988 surf camp to Travel + Leisure's best hotel in the world twice, this is the full Nihi Sumba story, what it costs in 2027, and how to plan a stay.

Nihi Sumba began in 1988 as Nihiwatu, a generator-powered surf camp that Claude and Petra Graves carved out of a wild stretch of Sumba’s southwest coast. In 2012, entrepreneur Chris Burch and hotelier James McBride bought the property, invested a reported US$30 million, and rebuilt it into the resort Luxury Sumba readers would name the best hotel in the world twice, in 2016 and again in 2017. Nihi Sumba luxury rates now begin around USD 1,000+ per night, published, seasonal and full board, with the top villas considerably higher. That is the short answer. The longer story, involving a wave rationed to ten surfers a day, a foundation that rewrote a regency’s health statistics, and a rebrand that changed how the industry defines luxury, is one of the most instructive in modern travel, and worth knowing before you plan a 2027 stay.

How Did a Surf Camp on a Forgotten Coast Begin?

In the late 1980s, Claude and Petra Graves sold nearly everything they owned and went searching for a wave. They found it below the cliffs of Nihiwatu, a two-and-a-half-kilometre crescent of sand in Wanokaka, West Sumba, backed by rice terraces and grazing land. There was no road, no power and no telephone; permission to build came through long negotiation with Sumbanese clan elders, and the first bungalows went up largely by hand. The reef in front of the camp held a left-hand barrel of rare quality, later named Occy’s Left after the Australian world champion Mark Occhilupo, and the Graves made a decision that still defines the resort: the wave would be limited to ten surfers a day, resort guests only. Decades before scarcity became a marketing device, Nihiwatu practised it as policy, and surfers paid handsomely for what amounted to a private ocean.

Why Did Chris Burch Buy Nihiwatu?

By the early 2010s the camp had a devoted following and tired bones. Chris Burch, who had visited as a guest, saw something worth preserving rather than replacing; he and James McBride, a career luxury hotelier, acquired the property in 2012 and spent the following years rebuilding it villa by villa. The reported US$30 million transformation brought private plunge pools, open-air bathrooms and a treehouse suite above the trees, yet the essentials survived: Sumbanese timber and thatch, a staff drawn overwhelmingly from surrounding villages, the ten-surfer cap, and the horses. Renamed Nihi Sumba, the resort reopened not as a polished import but as a sharpened version of itself. Burch has called it “the edge of wildness”, which remains the most accurate four-word summary of the place.

What Did “World’s Best” Actually Reward?

When Luxury Sumba readers voted the resort the number-one hotel in the world in 2016, then did it again in 2017, the award said less about thread counts than about a shift in taste. Nihi offered no marble lobby and no chandeliers; it offered sandalwood ponies swimming in the shorebreak at sunset, spa treatments reached by a ninety-minute trek through rice paddies, and dinners that changed with the day’s catch. The back-to-back wins told the luxury industry that remoteness, handled with competence, is not a compromise but the product itself. Every barefoot-luxury lodge that has opened in Indonesia since owes something to that verdict.

What Makes Nihi Different in 2027?

The experiences that built the legend are still the reason to come. The Nihi Sumba equestrian experience pairs you with the resort’s sandalwood horses for sunset rides along Nihiwatu beach or, for confident riders, a swim with them in the bay. The Nihi Sumba spa menu culminates in the NihiOka Spa Safari, a trek to a private valley where treatments unfold in open bales above the ocean; it is the centrepiece of our Sumba wellness and spa retreat itineraries. Luxury surfing at Nihi Sumba remains rationed at Occy’s Left, which makes a Nihi Sumba surf package one of the few anywhere in which the lineup is capped by policy rather than luck. Families are welcomed rather than tolerated: a Nihi Sumba family package can fold in horse grooming for children, the estate’s chocolate factory and gentle sandbar swims. Couples come for everything else. We regularly build a Sumba honeymoon photoshoot package or a Sumba babymoon luxury package around three or four Nihi nights, with the photographer, private dinners and quiet timings arranged before you land.

How Remote Is Nihi Sumba Really?

Less remote than the mythology suggests, and more remote than Bali-conditioned instincts expect. Daily flights link Bali with Tambolaka in about one hour and fifteen minutes, and the drive time from Tambolaka to Nihi Sumba is roughly ninety minutes on roads that improve each year. What remoteness means in practice is absence: no restaurant row, no traffic, no crowd beyond the ten souls sharing the wave. As one operator working across both islands, we remove the friction that distance can create, with collection from your Bali hotel doorstep, VIP fast-track at DPS from USD 160, and our own car and English-speaking driver waiting at Tambolaka, so the isolation stays a pleasure rather than a logistics exercise.

Is Nihi Sumba Worth the Price?

For the right traveller, emphatically. Published Nihi Sumba luxury rates start at roughly USD 1,000+ per night, moving with season and villa category, and the top residences command several multiples of that. The Nihi Sumba full board price covers three daily meals of genuine quality, most soft drinks and a rotating set of included activities. Guests often ask whether Nihi Sumba is all inclusive; the precise answer is full board, with signature experiences such as the Spa Safari, equestrian sessions and surf slots at Occy’s Left reserved and charged separately, which is exactly why they never feel crowded. The value case is strongest for honeymooners, surfers, families with curious children and anyone exhausted by performative luxury. It is weakest for travellers who want nightlife, shopping or a different restaurant every evening. Structured well, with nights, transfers, private touring and concierge handled together, the whole reliably exceeds the sum of its parts.

What Do the Sumba Foundation Programs Actually Do?

Claude Graves founded the Sumba Foundation in 2001, and it remains the moral core of the resort’s story. Funded in large part by guests, the Nihi Sumba foundation programs run health clinics and clean-water wells across West Sumba, serve daily school lunches, and operate a malaria initiative credited with cutting infection rates in nearby villages by more than 85 percent. Ask to visit a project with foundation staff; it is an hour that tends to reframe the entire holiday. When the resort describes itself as luxury with a purpose, this is the ledger behind the phrase.

Folding Nihi Into a 2027 Journey

Nihi rewards planning: allocation is finite, the best villas sell out months ahead, and the resort sits most naturally as the crescendo of a longer journey, with a few soft nights in Bali, the short flight east, then the coast. As one team operating across both islands, we hold the thread from your Bali hotel to the villa and back, and our Nihi Sumba package combines nights, transfers and private touring in a single design with a tailored quote within 24 hours.
