Sustainability — Luxury Sumba’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Our Commitment to Sustainability & Community Impact

At Luxury Sumba, we believe that true luxury is inseparable from responsibility. Sumba’s breathtaking beauty and unique cultural heritage are precious, fragile resources. We consider ourselves not owners, but custodians of the experiences we provide, with a profound duty to protect the island’s environment and empower its communities. Our sustainability policy is not an afterthought; it is woven into the very fabric of our operations, influencing every decision we make, from the partners we choose to the journeys we design.

Environmental Stewardship

Our commitment to preserving Sumba’s pristine landscapes is actionable and measurable.

  • Carbon Responsibility: We meticulously calculate the carbon footprint of each client journey, including flights, ground transport, and accommodation. We then offset 150% of this footprint by purchasing verified carbon credits from the Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project in Kalimantan, a leading REDD+ initiative that protects carbon-dense peat forests and critically endangered orangutans.
  • Eliminating Single-Use Plastics: We enforce a strict zero single-use plastic policy. Clients are provided with personalized, reusable water flasks upon arrival. We work exclusively with villas and lodges that have eliminated plastic bottles, straws, and single-use amenities, opting for glass, bamboo, and refillable ceramic dispensers.
  • Water Conservation: Water is a precious resource in Sumba’s arid climate. We partner with properties that have invested in advanced rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling systems to minimize their impact on local aquifers.
  • Marine & Coastal Protection: In collaboration with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Indonesia, we contribute to programs that protect Sumba’s coral reefs and turtle nesting sites along the coasts of Marosi and Pero. We educate our guests on reef-safe practices and organize optional, hands-on conservation activities.

Community Empowerment & Cultural Preservation

Our business model is designed to create a virtuous cycle, where our presence generates tangible, lasting benefits for the Sumbanese people.

  • Local Employment & Fair Wages: We are committed to maximizing local employment. Over 85% of our on-the-ground team—including our guides, drivers, and partner villa staff—are from local Sumbanese communities. We ensure they are paid a fair, living wage that is significantly above the regional minimum.
  • Direct Support for The Sumba Foundation: We are a proud corporate partner of The Sumba Foundation. A significant percentage of the profit from every journey is donated directly to the Foundation, funding their critical work in providing malaria clinics, clean water wells, school lunches, and educational facilities across the island.
  • Preserving Intangible Heritage: We are passionate about preserving Sumba’s unique Marapu culture. We facilitate a direct-to-artisan marketplace for the island’s world-renowned ikat textiles, ensuring 100% of the sale price goes to the weaver. This provides a vital economic incentive for younger generations to continue this UNESCO-recognized craft.
  • Respectful Cultural Engagement: Our local guides train our guests in cultural etiquette to ensure all interactions with communities are respectful and welcome. We have a strict policy against intrusive photography and adhere to the guidance of village elders (Rato) when visiting sacred sites.

Our Guiding Principles

Our approach is guided by the principles of regenerative tourism—leaving a place better than we found it. We believe that the transformative power of a Luxury Sumba journey should extend not only to our guests but to the island itself. We regularly review and report on our sustainability performance and are always seeking new ways to deepen our positive impact. This commitment is not just good business; it is our moral obligation to the island that inspires us.
